Internet and multiculture
In the age of technology we are going through one of the most beneficial aspects is the development of internet- a global net system that actually gives everybody the opportunity to communicate with anyone in the world instantly.
Of course there are both advantages and disadvantages on using the Internet. There are people who place too much emphasis on the drawbacks of the Internet claiming that anyone with a computer and a modem can put any kind of harmful information on the Internet. We cannot deny that there is a minority of people who use it for harmful or dangerous purposes such as terrorism, criminal activities and pornography. However, we have been taught from history that people who wish to act illegally will always find a way to do it and nothing can prevent them from doing so. While the benefits of having an uncontrolled source of information outweigh the disadvantages. Not to mention the possibility of being easier to track them and their actions down through their electronic traces. So it is up to each individual to use it properly and to his benefit.
On the other hand, it is generally acceptable that Internet has revolutionized human contact and relationships and has merely united the world into a global multinational village giving everybody the opportunity to get to know the other people regardless of their origins, race, colour, religion or political beliefs.
It is the first time in human history that people of different nations who live in distant places can get into contact and develop a new way of understating for each other. That gives them the opportunity to learn about other nations’ culture and civilization. They can get informed about other countries’ economies and policies and learn that there are other beliefs apart from theirs.
Through internet contact they can make new friends or simply play a game of chess. In that way everybody is able to broaden their horizons and mind and stop viewing things and relationships single-mindedly. Thus they can see the whole world differently and become more understanding and tolerant towards the others. Chatting through internet might make them realise that there are more things that can unite us than those dividing them. As a result they develop a better understanding of themselves which in turns helps everybody to become a peter and more mature personality. Moreover, after thousands of years of human existence on our world disable people can feel that they can do something useful, learn new things, get educated, get in touch with other people and even find employment.
Furthermore, by getting informed about the problems other people face they become more interested in their suffering which will definitely result in helping them overcome their difficulties not only individually but as members of a global community. Exchanging information and ideas on environmental problems will make them more aware and possibly more active members on such issues.
As a quote says “united we stand, divided we fall” and knowledge about what is going on around the world means that democracy can work better as politicians can no longer use false claims in order to get hold of their power as they did in the past.
Another aspect is business and traveling all over the world. Organizing and arranging their affairs, trips and business to distant countries can bring great benefit to everybody as it can lower the prices on goods and services but also change the quality of products. Even virtual travelling gives the opportunity to people who cannot afford it or are unable to travel to see and enjoy the beauty of our world and the individual characteristics of each country and nation.
Instant exchange of information can also prevent a disaster or help people in case of one faster and more efficiently which means that a lot of lives can be saved or helped. Scientists can now exchange views, ideas, get informed on new methods and researches on any scientific field for man’s benefit and well-being. Progress on our civilization advances rapidly and hopefully this advancement will work towards the union and better understanding of each other but also against discrimination and racism.
On the other hand, technology is not always available to everyone. There are countries, which are behind technology and people in the world who have never seen a computer. These people will have greater problems in the future when the rich half of the world will have been developed and have all the power. There is the possibility that there will be two groups of people-the rich ones who will have all the power and money and the poor ones who will be left out. Will Internet make us realise that we are all human beings with equal rights and that nobody should be left out of this unique world that can be united through this global net?
To sum up, internet as a multicultural means of communication has advantages that outnumber the disadvantages and can be used to bring people together in a better world united by culture, mutual understanding and exchange of ideas while making this process faster and better for everyone on earth.
